A new generation of players coached by Anatol Blumental won the first gold medal in the history of Soviet Water Polo at the European Championships of Utrecht on 1966.Top laurels went to goalkeepers V. Gulyaayev and I. Grabovsky; field players B. Grishin, V. Kuznetsov, B. Pushkarev, V. Zhmudsky, I. Zemtsov, B. Popov, A. Dolgushin, L. Osipop and V. Smyonov.
