George Mavrotas: The legend of Vouliagmeni
George Mavrotas, born in 1967, has been one of the best players of Greece and one of the few players in the World having participated at five Olympic Games. George Mavrotas started his glorious Water Polo carrier at “Vouliagmeni Nautical Club”, Greece in 1979. He played for the 1st time into the Greek A’ division in 1981 and in 1984, Josep Brasco, coach of the Greek National team, dared to select him within to the Greek Olympic team. At Los Angeles George Mavrotas, being 17 years old, started a long and full of successes International carrier including Seoul 88, Barcelona 92, Atlanta 96 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He participated at 4 World Championships (1986, 1990, 1994, 1998), 8 European Championships (1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999) and 5 FINA CUP (1987, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999). George Mavrotas played 511 International games and captained the Greek team from 1995 to 2000. With his team “Vouliagmeni Nautical Club” he won the 1991, 1997, 1998 National Championships and in 1997 the European cup for cup winners. George Mavrotas is currently, following academic career at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens.
