The team of Hyde Seals Swimming Club, Champion of England in 1908. Hyde Seals was dominating the English Water Polo Championship in 1903-1904-1905-1908-1911-1912-1913-1920 and 1924. Hyde is a town within the Metropolitan borough of Tameside in Great Manchester, England.

1905: Hyde Seals S.C. World Champions

The team of Hyde Seals Swimming Club, Champion of England in 1905. The Hyde Seals' Water Polo team travelled to Paris in 1904 as English champions. They took part in a competition organized by the French newspaper L'Auto and defeated the defending champions, Brussels, 14-2 in a match which was played in the River Marne.
The team included George Wilkinson who was to captain Great Britain to the Olympic Water Polo gold at the 1908 Games in London and at Stockholm in 1912. The Hyde Seals returned to Paris in 1905 and 1906 to retain their title.

1904: The legendary George Wilkinson

George Wilkinson (1879-1946), a prolific goal scorer with a variety of shots, is generally recognized as the world’s first great water polo player. In 1899 he was only playing in the Division III of the Manchester league, but the following year he was recruited by the famous Manchester Osborne Swim Club and they included him in their team for the Paris 1900 Olympics without even giving him a trial. After being on the winning Manchester team for the 1901 ASA championships, Wilkinson moved to Hyde Seal Swimming Club in 1902. He captained the Hyde team for 22 years, leading them to nine ASA titles and a victory over Brussels in the “World Championship” at Paris in 1904. Wilkinson won 3 Olympic gold medals, captained the winning team at the 1912 Olympics and was a reserve for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic teams. He won a total of 24 caps for England between 1900 and 1922, captaining the team on four occasions. Like a number of notable sportsmen of this time, he became a publican and was the landlord at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Hyde for many years.

The Olympic Club became vitally interested in the rugged sport of Water Polo in the early Twenties and over the years have made considerable contributions to its development. The 1924 United States Olympic Games team included Club members George Schroth, Ginger Austin, George Mitchell and Elmer Collet.
