1884: Polo at the Salford Public Baths, England

The Manchester Weekly Time. Friday, September 7, 1884. ¨Another cause of the increased popularity of the galas is to be found in the marvellous growth of the interest in Water Polo. The game may be described as association football in water, the most marked difference is that the hand and not the foot is used to propel the ball. Goalposts are used, as in the well-known outdoor winter game, and skilled players acquire surprising dexterity in placing the ball. The ball gained such a hold that county matches are now regularly played, and an International encounter is being arranged
