The
Manchester Weekly Time. Friday, September 7, 1884. ¨Another cause of the increased popularity of the galas is to
be found in the marvellous growth of the interest in Water Polo. The game may be
described as association football in water, the most marked difference is
that the hand and not the foot is used to propel the ball. Goalposts are used,
as in the well-known outdoor winter game, and skilled players acquire
surprising dexterity in placing the ball. The ball gained such a hold that
county matches are now regularly played, and an International encounter is
being arranged.¨
